The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind will be offering an ASL Interactive: Online Course in the fall of 2021. Registration is now open and classes will being the week of August 30. The course is free for FSDB family members and professionals who communicate and work directly with deaf and hard of hearing children in the state of Florida; no experience necessary.

About the Course
The ASL Interactive: Online Course is an opportunity for families and professionals to learn American Sign Language (ASL) through an online video chat room setting. While learning vocabulary, grammar, and culture, each individual’s specific signing needs will be met through online surveys and weekly correspondence. This experience is structured as a 12-week course built around each participant and can range from beginner to intermediate levels.
This approach is an endeavor that many parents and professionals have requested to support communication with deaf and hard of hearing children both at home and in the classroom.
While there is no cost for the ASL Interactive: Online Course and families/professionals are encouraged to participate, we really do hope that those involved are able to commit the necessary time and effort. We also ask for constructive input to better shape the course for the future.
Available to Florida residents only.
Priority will be given to parents/guardians and educators/support staff for students who are deaf/hard of hearing.
Due to large amounts of interest, the classes are first come first serve once the session registration is open. We will do our best to accommodate your needs, but cannot guarantee a seat.
Communications will occur through email correspondence. Please check your email regularly. It is also possible that our emails can end up in your spam folder/filter under your email account.
As this is an online internet course, interested persons will need access to a newer computer (no more than three to five years old), a high-speed internet connection and a better-than-average web camera for effective participation.
To get started, complete this easy online survey.

This project is made possible by a grant from the Theodore R. and Vivian M. Johnson Foundation.

What Past Participants are Saying
“I like the personal level of the classes with the instructors and the convenience of an online video class.”
“I enjoyed the length of session, collaborative practice with classmates and teacher, and weekly quizzes. Also, I found the linked videos with vocabulary of the session lessons helpful.”
“Excellent instructor who quizzed us and gave us receptive and expressive practice. Nice manner”
“I liked the video links that I could reference before and after the lesson. I also liked the practice sessions during the class. I found that I did much better with the homework, because I was able to practice and think about what I was saying. I struggled more with the in class practices because I couldn't pre-plan. However, I thought this was very beneficial because in a conversation, you can't pre-plan what you are going to say.
