One thing many look forward to this time of year is the traditional Thanksgiving meal. Stuffing reigns supreme as America’s favorite Thanksgiving side for the second year in a row, according to a survey done by Campbell’s. Mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, mac and cheese, and green bean casserole round out the top five favorites.
This is also a season to reflect on the things for which we are thankful. Recent research has pointed to gratitude's myriad positive health effects, including greater emotional and social well-being, better sleep quality, lower depression risks, and favorable markers of cardiovascular health. Now, new data from the long-term Nurses' Health Study shows that it may extend lives. So as we pass our favorite sides, we should also give thanks. It’s good for our health!
Have a lovely week with your friends and family.
Our Healthcare Center remains a wonderful resource that, in addition to acute health concerns, provides basic dental services, care coordination, Pediatric Developmental Clinic (for ADHD/behavior management), Psychiatry, mental health services, low vision clinic, PT/OT/ST and Audiology. Please contact your child’s care coordinator for more information regarding your student’s eligibility to utilize these services for the new school year.
Our staff hygienist, Sonja Gilbertsen is on campus part-time to help with basic dental needs and coordinates the UF Dental Clinic. She may be contacted at 904-827-2418 or gilbertsens@fsdbk12.org
November is National Healthy Skin Month
Skin is the body's largest organ and plays a vital role in protecting us from harmful UV rays, infections, and other environmental factors. While skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, it is also the most preventable. Healthy skin contributes to overall well-being and self-esteem. Skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis can significantly impact quality of life. During the winter months, your skin is usually at its palest, making it much easier for your dermatologist to check for unusual spots. Schedule an annual screening with a Dermatologist.

Medications and updated med orders
Diet Orders
Undesignated Glucagon Administration
FSDB has a protocol in compliance with the state of Florida’s recommendations that addresses treatment of students with medical signs of severe low blood sugar (such as shaking, trembling, dizziness, sweating, unconsciousness, seizure, coma, etc.). If the medical personnel determines that this is an emergency where the drug Glucagon can be beneficial, it can be administered without an MD order. The student does not have to have a documented diagnosis of diabetes or a prescription for the medication. Medication is kept in stock at HCC.
Medications
An adequate supply of all prescription medications must be available while your student is on campus. Please monitor for needed refills prior to your student returning to school. In some cases, students may need to return home to ensure their safety until their medications become available. Prescription medications must be sent to our pharmacist in the original labeled bottles. Signed physician orders may be faxed directly to our pharmacist at 904-827-2428.
Clearance Forms
A Clearance form is required to return to campus after any Emergency Room visit, surgery, or hospitalization has occurred (including on weekends or school breaks). It may be dropped off at the HCC, faxed to 904-827-2421, or emailed to HCCRecords@fsdbk12.org, but must be received prior to your student's use of transportation or return to school. A student on campus without Clearance must remain in the Health Care Center until it is received. Parents may have to pick up their student from school if Clearance cannot be obtained.
Keep your student home if they exhibit any signs of illness
Students must go home for:
Positive Flu or Covid tests
Temperature above 100.4
Repeated vomiting
Illnesses or symptoms require more than 23 hours in TCU
Symptoms beyond the scope of HCC
Clearance not obtained
Critical meds not available
EMS 911 calls
We are here to supplement your student's care while at school, but we cannot provide primary care services. Please utilize your PCPs and specialists for routine and follow-up care for concerns beyond the scope of the HCC.
