It’s time for St. Augustine’s Nights of Lights!
Visitors travel from all over the world to see this incredible display in downtown St. Augustine. This year marks the 32nd annual event, with more than three million lights shining on every corner of the historic district for two months (starting Saturday, November 15th through Sunday, January 11th.) It truly is an incredible sight to behold!
And guess what? The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind joins in the festive fun! Since we’re right on San Marco Avenue, our fences are adorned with lights thanks to our amazing Facilities Department. They work hard during the day, and it’s always a welcome sight each year when I come home to see the pretty lights surrounding the President’s Residence. That’s right—I have the blessing of serving and living on this incredible campus. I love that we can give our students and staff a holiday feel while celebrating alongside the city of St. Augustine.
Wishing everyone a blessed start to the holiday season!

Shekynah was previously a freelance and VRI interpreter up north and in Orlando, primarily when travel opportunities arose. Now, she is excited to be a staff interpreter here at FSDB!
Shekynah looks forward to building relationships with students, faculty, families, and others within the FSDB community. She is also eager to partner with and support everyone who cares for the students here.
"St. Augustine seems to be a tight-knit community, and I have received a warm welcome!" stated Shekynah.
She considers herself a coffee connoisseur and enjoys discovering local coffee shops. In her free time, she loves spending quality time with friends, being a supportive aunt from afar, going for nature runs, and relaxing at the beach or springs on the weekends. She is slowly embracing her identity as a "Floridian" and is growing to love the state. Originally from Minnesota, she moved to Florida to be closer to the ocean and to join a larger Deaf and interpreting community.
She would like to share that she grew up with a hearing mother and a Deaf father, which has allowed her to appreciate the two rich and distinct cultures that often intertwine. She looks forward to meeting everyone!
Welcome to the FSDB Family, Shekynah!

"So many memories, so hard to choose! Of course, the swimmers, swim meets, and trips to regionals with the lawnmower dance and s'mores on the beach. Then, fun times with co-workers: Mary Cameron Dillingham & Terrie Bell-Blue pranking me with an empty box of See's candy, Halloween stories with Jenny Henningsen Palmer's dog, and hosting late-night Hogwarts parties (& Oreo cookie fiascos) with Sue Clark. Also, the many 8th-grade science field trips & projects we did with the students (racecars, robotics factory, neon signs, kites, bridges, biographies, rockets), planned by Karen Frederick, the field trip queen! Maybe the best memory was an 8th-grade Washington, DC trip when a student (who did her research project on Arlington) stood in Arlington National Cemetery and said, "This... I read about it, but I never imagined all of this," as she teared up. ""

This incredible class has been part of FSDB for years and remains a favorite for both students and audiences! Students from the Deaf High School and Blind High School can enroll in Dance Repertory—a class where students grow in confidence and creativity shines.
When they’re not rehearsing, they’re performing both on campus and across Florida! You may have seen them in one of their many winter holiday shows, spring musicals, FSDB Community Open Houses, or even at big events like the Orlando Magic game and DeafNation Expo.
I recently popped into their class and couldn’t resist snapping a photo with the troupe. (I am grinning while wearing a sparkling gold top hat with all the students smiling in front of a brightly lit Christmas tree, and yes…there is a student wearing Santa hat! Wait! Could that be a clue for their upcoming musical? 🤔 I wonder what it will be! Add a comment below to take a guess. (If you are a student or staff at FSDB, Shhhhhh!)
(Insider tip: I saw the first four acts in rehearsal, and these students are AMAZING!)

Culinary Arts students prepared an Italian menu for FSDB 2026-27 Teachers of the Year!
Students prepared Caprese salad, homemade gnocchi with pesto, Lasagna made with their own pasta, ragu, and bechamel, with freestanding Tiramisu with a meringue for dessert.
The servers worked well with the guests and coordinated with each course with the cooking team. Students managed operations like clockwork! It was a fun learning activity and team building exercise.

Dawn Parke, Blind Kindergarten Teacher, shares her favorite memory below:
"Choosing just one favorite memory after over 14 years of working at FSDB is difficult. My early memories of the ELC bring me much joy as I remember watching the young students from the Deaf department and Blind department growing and learning together. I also have cherished memories of trick-or-treating in Kids Town and the annual Safety Fair, where students could climb into armored cars, fire trucks, and police vehicles—real-world experiences many might never have had without FSDB. When I think of my favorite memory, I realize it is not one moment but the joy of witnessing my students create their own memories. FSDB has given them a place to belong and opportunities and resources to enrich their lives. I feel honored to have shared those memories. "
