Jessie Girton, Executive Director of Career Development, shares her favorite memory below:

"I have been fortunate to know some of these students since their early years. It has been a true privilege to witness their growth, whether watching them mature from childhood or begin their high school journey, and to see them develop into young adults, as graduates or as participants in the SOAR program."

This is Jaylene Rivera.

Jaylene has been with FSDB for two years now. She is currently in the SOAR program.

One of her favorite memories at FSDB would be having the time to enjoy the little things in school, like having friends to talk to.

She would advise other students who want to attend FSDB to take advantage of everything FSDB gives them. They give you so much support, and you can find different things to learn that will guide you through your life journey.

Jaylene decided to defer her diploma so that she had more time to think about what she wants to do in the future, in line with her education and decisions.

After leaving FSDB, she plans to find a stable job and go to college to become a lawyer. She isn't sure what kind of lawyer yet, but she knows she wants to become one.

One of the things Jaylene loves most about being part of the SOAR program is that they teach her how to become an adult, as in the real world, you will be treated like one.

Jaylene hopes to accomplish her successes in the SOAR program by remembering everything she was taught, looking back on it in the future and being proud of her decision to stay at FSDB after graduation.

"FSDB is a good option because it gives you so many options to choose from if you want to be involved in something, but also knowing that you can do as much as you can on this campus about respecting the policy and the rules that they have, but most of all having fun with the time that you have in FSB and making it last. Make it known that you can ask questions about anything and need support. Staff and teachers will support you in any way possible. Because they're there to support and help you if you don't understand anything, so take advantage of anything you can in FSDB because you will not see that in a regular school," shared Jaylene.

Our Deaf High School seniors in English Honors have been diving into an adapted version of Beowulf this semester. When I shared that I studied the Old English poem in college, they invited me to stop by—and I couldn't resist!

Ms. Brady led an engaging lesson where we paired up to analyze the article's summary and commentary. I loved joining in and seeing the innovative learning happening firsthand.

These classroom visits are always a highlight—reading a story, joining a discussion, or simply connecting with students and looking forward to many more!

Raymond's Warehouse provides students with hands-on training in a real-world work environment. Students gain experience in inventory management, money handling, and cash drawer maintenance, while also learning to operate a point-of-sale system independently. Christian Rivera, Behavioral Specialist, shares his favorite memory below:

"My favorite memory is definitely the annual DMS talent show for staff and students. It's so much fun to watch kids show off their skills, an excellent opportunity for staff to go all out for the kids' enjoyment, and one of the moments that reminds me how much I love what I do!"

The FSDB Football and Cheerleading teams traveled to the Maryland School for the Deaf this past weekend to face the Orioles under the lights on Saturday, September 6.

It was a challenging game, as FSDB fought hard but ultimately lost, with a final score of 14-34 after Maryland School for the Deaf scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

"Offensively, we had to earn every yard we gained, as MSD was a very physical team," said Head Coach Eric Lefors.

We are proud to announce that Nicole Jones will be joining our school as the new Athletic Director!

Nicole previously worked at the Delaware School for the Deaf as both a Physical Education and Health Educator and the Athletic Director. Before that, she taught 5th grade, and her students just graduated in June 2025.

"I chose to work at FSDB because it is my dream job! Students here are very fortunate to have so much accessibility and support. I look forward to continuing to build the athletic program. Sports are my passion 24/7!" shared Nicole. "Now I get to work in the world of sports! YAY SPORTS!"

Originally from New Jersey, Nicole's family will be relocating here, and she is excited for her son to grow up on the sidelines.

A fun fact about Nicole is that she loves food. She works out so that she can eat her favorite meals.

Welcome, Nicole Jones, to the FSDB family!

FSDB offers many exciting opportunities for students to participate in athletics!

Last week, I attended our Cross Country meet right here on campus and had the joy of cheering on students from both our Deaf and Blind Departments. They showed incredible Passion, Pride, and Perseverance as they ran through the hot Florida temperatures.

I’m so proud of their effort and determination—and I can’t wait to see them continue to grow and beat their personal bests!

A huge thank you to our dedicated coaches who support our students during morning and afternoon practices, and to our amazing guide runners who run side-by-side with our Blind Department students during practices and meets. Your commitment makes a lasting impact and enables our students to join in doing what they love.
